The СŷƵ’s newest Wawa will open Thursday at 6216 Hamilton Blvd. in Lower Macungie Township.
To celebrate the store’s grand opening, an outdoor celebration is planned beginning at 8 a.m. with free “Coffee, Hoagies, & Kindness” T-shirts for the first 100 customers. At 8:30 a.m., a ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place with Wawa’s mascot, Wally Goose; at 9 a.m., the drive-thru — what makes this 2,200 square-foot Wawa unique — will officially open. The operation will be capable of serving 12 cars at a time throughout the day. The location will also be unique as a standalone store; there will be no walk-in convenience store, nor gas pumps.
The drive-thru is only the second one in Pennsylvania and will be the only one in the СŷƵ. The other Wawa drive-thru is in Falls Township, Bucks County.
“Wawa continues to test new store concepts with this latest drive-thru format, providing an opportunity for our customers to experience and enjoy their favorite Wawa products while remaining inside their car,” Dave Simonetti, senior director of store operations, said in a news release. “Wawa is committed to increasing convenience and testing new formats and designs to continue to evolve to meet customer’s needs.”
Besides the drive-thru, the Wawa will have a fresh food kitchen, a bakery, and a space for beverages and packaged goods. About 25 people will be employed at the location.
Other grand opening activities will include a Hoagies for Heroes hoagie-building competition between state police’s Troop M and the Lower Macungie Fire Department.
The new Wawa will be open 5 a.m. to midnight daily.
