An unfounded report of an armed person prompted lockdowns of Muhlenberg College and multiple Allentown schools Monday.
Allentown police said in a news release that the department received an anonymous report of an armed person near the college about 12:15 p.m. The college and nearby schools were placed on lockdown to secure the area, according to authorities.
Police determined the call was a hoax, the release states.
While police were investigating the false report, officers were called to the scene of an armed robbery at a Wells Fargo Bank in the 100 block of College Drive, roughly a mile from the college, according to authorities. Police arrived and determined a robbery had just happened there.
Both incidents remain under investigation.
An Allentown School District spokesperson said Allen High School, Raub Middle School, Muhlenberg Elementary School and Union Terrace Elementary School were temporarily placed on lockdown Monday afternoon because of police activity.
Muhlenberg College students were also ordered to shelter in place, according to the campus’ safety and police. The lockdown was lifted about 1:50 p.m.
Anyone with information on the incidents is asked to contact police at 610-437-7721 or at 610-437-7721 ext. 1. Tips may be sent anonymously through the department’s Tip411 app as well.
