Police took one person into custody following an lengthy standoff Wednesday evening in Nazareth.

In a social media post, Mayor Lance Colondo said he was informed that an individual was detained as of 10 p.m. Wednesday, and there were no injuries.

Nazareth police said in a social media post that officers were called to South New Street after concerns were raised about a resident making threats to himself and others.

In a press release issued late Wednesday, Nazareth police said they were called to the home in the 300 block of South New Street around 1 p.m. to check on the welfare of a resident. Officers learned he was in possession of “numerous firearms.”

The department said the situation was resolved peacefully after several hours of negotiation following coordinated efforts of various local, state and county agencies. The resident was taken from the area to receive medical care.

“We would like to commend the collaborative efforts of all involved agencies, which led to a peaceful resolution and ensured the safety of everyone involved,” the department said in a release.

Police earlier Wednesday asked residents in the neighborhood to shelter in place, , the fire department serving Nazareth. Residents in that block were requested to shelter in place, according to the post, which was shared just after 4:30 p.m.

In an updated post, the fire department shared a map showing the perimeter of the shelter in place extending west from South New Street to South Whitfield Street, and north and south between East Prospect and South streets.

People were asked to avoid the area, and roads in the vicinity were closed for several hours.
