A “dangerous” snow squall moved through the Lehigh Valley and surrounding regions Tuesday afternoon, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a snow squall warning.

The warning, which expired at 4:30 p.m., included northwestern Lehigh, Northampton, Carbon and Monroe counties. Snow showers were reported across northern portions of the region.

Around 3:40 p.m., the squall was located along a line extending from Flatbrookville, New Jersey, to near Hometown, Schuylkill County, moving southeast at 25 mph. Intense bursts of heavy snow combined with wind gusts up to 35 mph were capable of creating whiteout conditions with visibility near zero, according to the weather service.

Those conditions can quickly cause travel to become difficult, if not dangerous, in a matter of minutes, according to the warning.

By around 5 p.m., the squall had moved out of the region, though there was a slight chance of snow showers through the early evening, according to the weather service forecast.

There will be a greater chance for snow Wednesday night across the Lehigh Valley, with forecasters expecting less than an inch. Areas to the north, including the Poconos, could get up to 2 inches, according to the weather service.

Light snow possible Wednesday night in Lehigh Valley, but wind could be a bigger problem
