United Way launches special fund to help 30 people displaced by Allentown fire that tore through row homes

United Way of Greater Lehigh Valley is working to provide financial relief for residents victimized in a day-after-Christmas fire in Allentown that displaced 30 and injured three people, one critically.

it has established a Cedar Street Fire Fund with community groups to raise funds and coordinate a financial-relief effort for fire victims. The fire, which broke out Thursday, destroyed or significantly damaged 10 homes in the 700 block of Cedar Street, off North Seventh Street.

“For families facing the unimaginable loss of their homes during this holiday season, United Way remains focused on providing critical support during this challenging time,” United Way CEO Marci Lesko said in a news release. “Through this partnership with trusted Allentown organizations, we are ensuring that every dollar donated is responsibly managed and directly benefits those affected by the fire.”

Donations , or via mail at the United Way, 110 American Parkway NE, Suite F-120, Allentown, PA 18109. Mark checks attention “Cedar Street Fire Fund”. Additionally, donations can be made via text to  “Allentown” to 40403. Gift card donations are also encouraged, United Way said.

Authorities have charged Allentown resident Santos Mota-Ramirez with starting a fire in one of the homes, along with other offenses.

Mota-Ramirez, 60, was arraigned Friday morning on charges alleging he assaulted a woman and trapped another resident inside his home when he started a fire there. He was charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, aggravated arson and causing catastrophe, which are felonies, as well as a misdemeanor of recklessly endangering another person.

A woman whom first responders rescued from the basement was listed in critical condition, authorities said.

The fire spread to six adjoining homes, authorities said, and several people had to be evacuated.
